Trailer Glossary - Basic Terms
Shopping for a trailer can feel overwhelming if you're not familiar with all the technical terms. That's why we created this easy-to-understand Trailer Glossary — so you can feel confident choosing the right trailer for your needs
Axle - A shaft that connects the wheels. Trailers often have single, tandem (two), or triple axles, depending on how much weight they carry.
Ball Mount - The part of the hitch system that holds the trailer ball and attaches to your tow vehicle.
Breakaway System - A safety system that automatically applies trailer brakes if the trailer becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle.
Cargo Trailer - A trailer with enclosed sides and a roof, designed to protect loads from weather and theft.
Coupler - The part of the trailer that locks onto the tow ball of your vehicle.
Dump Trailer - A trailer with a bed that lifts (usually hydraulically) to unload cargo like gravel or debris easily.
Enclosed Trailer - A trailer that’s fully covered, like a small mobile storage unit. Great for tools, vehicles, and valuables.
Flatbed Trailer / Car Hauler - A trailer with an open, flat platform — ideal for hauling oversized items, cars, & equipment.
GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) - The maximum total weight of the trailer and its cargo, as rated by the manufacturer.
Hitch - The device attached to the tow vehicle that connects it to the trailer.
Jack - A device (manual or hydraulic) that raises or lowers the trailer's tongue to connect or disconnect from a tow vehicle.
Payload Capacity - The maximum amount of weight you can safely load onto a trailer (not counting the trailer’s own weight).
Ramps - Folding or detachable boards/platforms used to load vehicles or heavy equipment onto trailers.
Stake Pockets - Square cutouts along the sides of a trailer used for inserting stakes, sides, or tie-downs.
Tandem Axle - A trailer with two axles (four wheels) for greater stability and higher load capacity.
Tongue - The front part of the trailer that connects to the tow vehicle (includes the coupler and sometimes wiring).
Trailer Brakes - Braking system that helps the trailer stop safely — can be electric, hydraulic, or surge brakes.
Utility Trailer - A versatile open trailer used for landscaping, hauling equipment, and general transport.
Winch - A mechanical device used to pull heavy loads onto a trailer, especially useful for vehicles.

Load Trail (Load Capacity) - The maximum amount of cargo weight a trailer is designed to carry safely.
Trailer VIN - The Vehicle Identification Number assigned to a trailer, needed for registration, insurance, and tracking.
Safety Chains - Chains that connect the trailer tongue to the tow vehicle as a backup if the coupler disconnects.
Breakover Angle - The maximum angle a trailer can pass over without the underside scraping the ground.
Leaf Springs - A suspension system made from layered steel strips that absorb road shocks for smoother towing.
Torsion Axle - A trailer axle design using rubber cords for independent suspension and reduced maintenance.
7-Way Plug - A common trailer electrical connector with seven pins for lights, brakes, and battery charging.
4-Way Plug - A basic trailer wiring connector with four pins, typically used for trailers without brakes.
Rub Rail - A side rail along a flatbed trailer used for extra tie-down points and cargo security.
